Podcast: The new Machinery Regulation 2027 – are you ready?
On 19 January 2027, the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC will cease to apply. One day later, on 20 January 2027, the Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 will become directly applicable in all EU Member States. From that moment onwards, machinery and processes must comply with the new requirements.
And these new requirements go beyond simply updating the existing regulations. The way in which we develop machinery has changed significantly in recent years. Machinery is becoming smarter, software is playing an increasingly important role, systems are connected to networks, and artificial intelligence is making its mark. The Machinery Regulation reflects these developments and places greater emphasis on, amongst other things, cybersecurity, functional safety, software as a safety component, AI and digital documentation.
This means that the impact is not limited to the machine builder or manufacturer. Engineering, software, control systems, risk assessment, CE marking and technical documentation are also affected. The question, therefore, is not only what will change on 20 January 2027, but above all what you need to have in place before that date.
