Commissioned by Metis and the University of Cologne, VIRO designed and realised a special hoisting tool, enabling a WCU (Warm Calibration Unit) to be placed safely and accurately on a cryogenic unit. The WCU is essential for the calibration of the Metis instrument and therefore for the quality of the data generated by the METIS instrument.
A challenging assignment
This may sound like a straightforward lifting task, but in practice it proved to be quite challenging. The WCU has several configurations and centres of gravity and, depending on the version, weighs between 580 and 1,100 kg. In addition, the lifting tool is used at three different locations, each with its own requirements. The available space during lifting operations was very limited. As a result, the tool not only had to be strong and stable, but also extremely slim in design. At the same time, its own weight could not exceed 350 kg. Since the WCU is a delicate component, operability was also a key consideration. The lifting tool is therefore equipped with features that allow the operator to carry out the lifting movement in a controlled manner and with extra care.
A complete and practical result
The result is a modular, adjustable lifting tool with adjustable arms and counterweights. In addition, the frame can be dismantled into sections, making transport and handling easier. The tool was designed in accordance with NEN-EN 13155 and went through the entire process from CAD design and calculations to production, CE marking and load testing. From a complex lifting challenge to a safe and practical solution, developed from design through to delivery.
