Security in innovation and optimisation

When designing innovations and optimisations, you often find yourself in uncharted territory. A proof of concept can help to avoid pitfalls and rule out risks.

A proof of concept is a virtual calculation and analysis or a physical model of the concept. As a product owner, it can help you to identify potential problems and eliminate them early on. These could be technical problems, or perhaps logistics or operating issues.

A proof of concept has other benefits. You can ask employees and other parties for feedback on design decisions. A successful proof of concept can help to convince stakeholders and investors to back the idea. It also allows you to prove that the concept satisfies the legal stipulations and regulations.

You identify problems and risks and create support for your idea

Why a proof of concept?

A proof of concept helps you to avoid risks such as:

  • Standstill of a defective machine leading to production process stagnation
  • Recall actions once an incorrect product has been launched on a large-scale
  • Danger of death due to legal stipulations not being properly followed, e.g. on the production of a gas or the design of an amusement attraction
  • High and worthless design costs due to a concept that contains deficiencies being progressed to development and finalisation

Virtual calculation and analysis

Our engineers in the Engineering & Analysis department carry out complex calculations and analyses every single day. Their calculations and analyses are used to determine the strength and stiffness of materials and structures, natural frequencies and responses to vibrations, weather influences, and changes to materials. Other studies may look at flow patterns, pressure drops, and heat transfer.

  • At the start of the design process, we carry out predictive and guiding calculations and analyses so that development of your concept is based on accurate, viable principles.
  • At the end of the design process, we carry out validating calculations and analyses so that you only incur production costs once it is certain that your concept satisfies the requirements and principles in full.

VIRO’s Engineering & Analysis department often works in 3D to ensure the highest level of calculation accuracy and reliability. 3D designs can be converted to Virtual Reality, turning the product or part into an almost tangible reality and allowing you to evaluate its operation and functionalities life-like. It’s the ultimate test of whether the concept meets your expectations.

Physical model

A number of VIRO’s market groups also offer a proof of concept in the form of a physical model. This might be a prototype or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

  • A prototype is a downsized version of the final product and often lacks the full functionality and aesthetic qualities of the final version. Its primary purpose is to allow you to test and evaluate the concept’s usability, functionality, and design.
  • A MVP is more complete than the prototype and is, in essence, the initial version of the intended end product. The MVP can be used to test usability and value with potential users and customers.

In certain cases, the physical proof of concept is provided by the Heavy-Duty Vehicles division in Echt or the Special Tooling division in Hengelo.
